Takashi Miike accepted the Keys of the Fantastic Pavilion at the ongoing Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), where the Japanese filmmaker presented his latest feature: the neo-noir Bad Lieutenant: Tokyo (2026), starring Shun Oguri and Lily James.
Fantasia Fest’s Artistic Director Mitch Davis, acting as Ambassador for the Fantastic Pavilion, handed the Keys to the incredibly prolific Miike, who has been an unstoppable creative force since the 1990s.
Miike’s wild oeuvre encompasses crime, horror, samurai, fantasy, western, and V-Cinema. During the early 2000s, Miike’s brutal Audition (1999) and his manga adaptation Ichi the Killer (2001), among other flicks, were the epitome of extreme and ultra cool Asian cinema.
Miike influenced the likes of Eli Roth and Quentin Tarantino – he made a cameo in Roth’s Hostel (2005) and directed QT in Sukiyaki Western Django (2007) –, was praised by Alejandro Jodorowsky, and helmed a Masters of Horror episode (Imprint).
