Terrifier 3 (2024) – opening tomorrow in the U.S. – is definitely the most talked about horror movie of the season. And if you’re a fan of Damien Leone’s franchise, there’s also a new official novelization of the previous entry, Terrifier 2 (2022). The paperback was written by Tim Waggoner – who recently penned as well the novelization of Ti West’s X (2022) –, is over 400 pages long, and is now available.
Scream TV, a free channel owned by NYX Media Corp., will be launched in the U.S. in time for Halloween: on October 13. The channel will broadcast horror classics, starting with such films like Nosferatu (1922), Black Sunday (La maschera del demonio, 1960), Suspiria (1977), Zombie (Zombi 2, 1979), The Evil Dead (1981), and Pieces (Mil gritos tiene la noche, 1982). In Heretic (2024) Hugh Grant plays the antagonistic Mr. Reed, who’ll force two young female missionaries (Sophie Thatcher, Chloe East) to play a game in order to escape from his labyrinthine house. This horror movie was written and directed by Scott Beck and Bryan Woods, who are best known for penning the original A Quiet Place (2018). A24 will release it in theaters on November 8. There’s a brand new international trailer for Robert Eggers’ Nosferatu (2024). In it we can see Lily-Rose Depp, Willem Dafoe and Nicholas Hoult, as their respective characters sense the imminent arrival of the vampire. This new version of Dracula hits cinemas from Christmas Day.
Genre cinema has a solid presence in the list of nominees for the 2024 BAFTA Scotland Awards. Out of Darkness (2022) – a survival thriller set in the prehistoric era – got three noms: Actor Film (Kit Young), Actress Film (Safia Oakley-Green) and Feature Film. The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde (2022) was also nominated for Director Fiction (Hope Dickson Leach) and Actor Film (Lorn Macdonald). The winners will be revealed on November 17.
Speaking of genre movies getting institutional recognition, Leticia Tonos’ Aire: Just Breathe (2024) was chosen as Dominican Republic’s official Oscar submission. It’s worth remembering that this science fiction picture won the inaugural Fantastic Latido Award in 2023 and was featured this year as one of our gala screenings in Cannes.

Vinegar Syndrome shared the releases of their partner labels for the current spooky season and, as usual, there’s plenty of interesting stuff getting the Blu-ray treatment, including: Bertrand Bonello’s Zombi Child (2019) – one of the few modern films that deals with the origins of the zombie in Haiti –, Justin Kurzel’s true crime drama Snowtown (2011), Jeremy Saulnier’s debut feature Murder Party (2007), and the documentary The Found Footage Phenomenon (2021).
